Welcome the Dutch Flat Hotel Retreat Center. My husband Tom and I never imagined that our winter drive through the Sierras in Northern California seven years ago, in search of a small getaway cabin, would result in the discovery, purchase and complete restoration of this beautiful, sleeping giant. Our journey through the long restoration phase was exciting, trying, and sometimes daunting but, it was also fun, educational, adventurous and life changing.
The building seemed to call to us as we drove up Main Street for the first time. It was in severe disrepair and had been all but abandoned for over 25 years. During the next two years after that winter drive, we would work alongside our three man carpenter team day and night when we could; do everything from landscaping to plumbing installation to help complete the monumental task of resurrecting the soul of this quaint little town. We are proud to be a part of restoring this historic landmark that represents a significant part of the California Gold Rush era.
I have always been an avid antique collector so for two years I would purchase and place into storage the beautiful pieces we have in the hotel today. Of course, that is one of the reasons we ran out of money on several occasions but somehow, we always found a way to squeeze out just enough capital to continue to the next phase. That was the daunting part. The possibilities for the interior design were practically endless so I just let my imagination go wild. It is no surprise though that the décor turned out very much like my own Grandmother’s house was; warm, cozy and inviting. Many guests have expressed to us that that is exactly how they feel when they walk through the front door.
My husband Tom is a Home Inspector in the Bay Area and continues to work until he is able to retire to Dutch Flat. We hope that that will be sooner than later. I am a former Bay Area business owner, part time professional opera singer, crafter, chef wannabe, seamstress and oh yeah, Innkeeper.
Dutch Flat is a beautiful place to live and visit. It is my dream to share the creative energy that thrives in this amazing place. In addition to a B&B the Dutch Flat Hotel is available as a retreat and event facility. We are able to accommodate most any type of retreat for up to twenty persons. The hotel is handicap accessible throughout the first floor. Our meeting room for large groups is located across the street at the historic, 156 year old, Odd Fellows Lodge. We have Internet access and a game room with a billiard table and large screen television. We also just opened the Dutch Flat Hotel Cafe! We are open from 8AM-2PM Friday through Sunday. Come by and try some of our Homemade desserts, Take & Bake Pizzas, and more!
